Troubleshooting
“Things got WORSE after I started”
Apparent demolition after assuming the wish fulfilled is usually old structures clearing — unless fear has taken the wheel.
What’s actually happening
Two very different things produce this symptom, and they need opposite responses.
The first is the bridge beginning with demolition. The room the new furniture is for sometimes has to be emptied first: the dead-end job ends, the lukewarm arrangement collapses, the plan that was quietly blocking the desire falls apart. It looks like disaster and is actually clearance. Neville’s students reported this constantly.
The second is genuinely creating the worse thing: if the practice made you MORE afraid — scanning for signs, imagining failure vividly "so you can prevent it," rehearsing loss with feeling — then that fear was itself deeply felt imagining, and the law recorded it faithfully. Worry is an imaginal act with excellent technique.
The correction
- 1
Diagnose which one is happening by checking the state, not the events: were you calm and assuming when things shifted, or already anxious and monitoring? Steady state + upheaval = likely roadworks; keep the end and do not renegotiate the assumption at every bang of the demolition.
- 2
If fear took the wheel: stop all techniques for a few days except two — nightly revision of the day’s fearful moments, and the mental diet during the day. Rebuild calm first; a frightened mind should not be handed vivid imagery.
- 3
In both cases, refuse to narrate the events as a verdict. "It got worse, so the law failed" is itself an assumption, and a strong one. Narrate transit instead: "The room is being cleared."
